User Ratings and Reviews
4 Stars Great design, sound just ok
This is great for a very small room. I use it in my kitchen when I am working. I have to have the volume full blast. It’s not Bose quality. It is fine for my needs. I am glad I found it.
4 Stars Good choice for very portable sound
Since my 1st gen iPod lacks a built-in speaker, I needed a product that would essentially perform the same function. After much shopping without finding many options I decided to take my chances on the Cyanics. It was a good choice.
In general, the reviews posted here are very accurate. The unit consists of the actual speaker/power supply married to a clear plastic case which houses the iPod. The black speaker part has one slider switch with three positions– off, on, and ‘on when swung’. This latter choice is a clever feature, whereby the unit is off until it is (smoothly and quickly) swung to the perpendicular, then it turns on. By putting the slider switch to ‘on’, the speaker is always on, even when folded parallel to the iPod. In other words, it does not have to be rotated to give sound, although the sound is louder if the speaker is swung out.
There is a small swing-out stand at the bottom of the plastic case, allowing it to stand alone vertically. Also as pictured it can open like a book and stand up hands free for horizontal viewing, although it seems fragile when used in this manner and I’m always afraid I will break it. The speaker unit also contains power and charging lights, an external headphone jack juxtaposed to the native iPod jack, and a usb port for charging. The battery will last quite long; it has only run out on me once, after I used it for a few hours straight. It recharges quickly. It does not use any power from the iPod.
Another nice feature is that the iPod data port remains available when this item is in use. This allows charging/syncing or the use of other accessories simultaneous to using the cyanics. One small problem in this regard is that the iPod’s data port is accessed through an opening in the bottom of the plastic case. This opening will neatly accommodate a standard iPod sync/charge cable, but is too tight for some other access. For instance, there is no way to use my iTrip which attaches through the data port. I am able to use my Sony bluetooth dongle, but I had to dremel some of the plastic case to make it fit.
As for sound quality… it is what you would expect from looking at the thing– quite adequate to replace the non-existent built-in speaker– but certainly nothing audiophilic. There is no external volume control and so you must use the iPod volume control as usual.
The attached plastic case does not match the manufacturing quality of the speaker portion, and this has been mentioned in other reviews. It seems made of cheap plastic… I quite expect it to break one of these days, especially given the torque applied to it through rotating the speaker or using it as a stand. Also, it is tricky opening the plastic case to take the iPod in and out. It takes some practice, and the two little clips are sure to break off if you’re not careful. Since when the iPod is encased in the cyanics speaker unit it will not fit into my belt case, I find myself frequently taking the iPod in and out of the Cyanics whenever I want to carry the iPod on my belt. It would be nice to incorporate some way of using a belt clip with the cyanics speaker.
I should note that I have used this unit daily for several weeks now without breakage or mechanical trouble, and so many of the quality concerns I mention are theoretical. Overall I am happy with the product, and it is certainly worth the price paid.
4 Stars A must have for anyone who travels.
This is a must have for anyone who travels. I work in a different office everyday and this product allows me to bring the contents of my ipod with me. The speakers are not great, but they are better than listening to music on computer speakers. What I like most about this is the auto setting. To turn off the speakers, all you need to do is turn the speaker and it shuts off.
